One of the things that you see in the news and from the people around are reactions to others that are shown. They should move to the left! They shouldn't feel that way. Who do they think they are?
Our country is living in an age where we have progressed, and I use that word intentionally, to a point where people have expectations of strangers around them that they probably should not have. When I watch movies from the past and remember conversations with my parents and older relatives the expectations that they had of the people around them was that they would do wrong and they would take advantage and they would treat them poorly. Nowadays the expectation seems to be that everyone should treat me like I'm the best and if you don't you're discriminating against me because of my race or sexual preference.
I remember reading a book, one of the few westerns that I've ever read, where the main character lived alone out in the middle of nowhere. When he was going to town he would ride his horse in to town. He would be very careful on his approach because he didn't know how the people in town would react to him. When he got to the main gathering place in town, the saloon, he would pull his horse up to the place where you tie horses up, and get off of his horse. But he always made a point of getting off his horse on the side away from the people in the saloon. The author explained that he did this because if people started shooting at him he wanted the horse between him and the guns so he had a chance to survive.
Sadly, it seems like we are entering a time where that may be the most prudent approach to groups of people ever. Instead of being able to express myself clearly and freely I have to gauge the temperature of the audience. Only fools walk in and start talking loudly about how much they hate planet killers and electricity wasters. No mention of baby killers, drug addicted users, money thieves, or any of those people. They use our morals of right and wrong against us in order to manipulate us into certain actions.
So I may start watching more westerns. A little bit more John Wayne, the Magnificent Seven, the Lone Ranger where the hero is not conflicted. Where he goes and defeats people at night but helps during the day. I don't know if I'll go as far as Andy Griffith, but it's nice to have that option. Good luck piercing my bubble!
